Minnamurra Public School Garden Club
The Minnamurra Garden was formed many years ago with initially only six raised oval garden beds, which still form one of the many sections to our present garden. Over the years of holding Lunchtime Garden Club, many children have spent countless hours enjoying all aspects of gardening and learning the key skills of being a successful veggie gardener.
A few years later, Mrs Mitchell thought that it was time to expand the school veggie garden and created the Eastern wing to the garden. This area is mainly an area to sit and enjoy the garden. Additionally, it is used as an outdoor learning space with tables and chairs to sit on, and of course, it is surrounded by more garden beds and a very happy banana producing tree. Some time later, it was time to extend the garden again with the addition of the northern wing added to make use of the northern aspect and sunshine.
Over this time, the Minnamurra Veggie Garden has been entered in several gardening competitions, winning many awards, including the major win of the first prize in the Better Homes and Gardens / Bunnings competition.
Many children are still enjoying the veggie garden today. Due to the vast affects of COVID in 2020 and 2021, the Garden Club has been hard at work restoring the garden to its former glory. During the lunch time Garden Club, there are many jobs to be worked on such as: weeding, mulching, planting of seeds and seedlings, the cultivating of crops and selling the healthy organic crops to students and staff.
The Garden Club would love to have the aid of any community volunteers who have a green thumb and the love of veggie gardening to assist in the garden! Please contact Mrs Mitchell if you would like to volunteer your time in the garden.
